The Black sea coast - Bulgaria
Along the Black Sea Coast: Dobrudja beach, Kaliakra, Zlatni piassatsi, Yatata (Flocks) swamp, Pobitite Kamani (The Upright Stones), Kamchia, Burgas lakes, Ropotamo, Veleka and Silistar
The Black Sea coast line is extended 378 km of the Bulgarian territory. Between Cape Kartal to the north and the river Resovska to the south along the vertical rocks follow wide sand beaches and dunes of slanting stone slopes through which rivers silently crawl to the sea, or small swamps and lagoons huddling for protection.
Climate of the Bulgarian Black Sea coastal line.
Obeying the laws of mutual influence between the land and the sea, the coastal regions are distinguished by softer continental climate. Here the winter is not so cold and the summer is not so hot. A specific feature of the Black Sea coast is the relatively small softening sea influence.
This feature is reflected in the unusual situation of the water layers. The warmer and saltier water coming from the south remains beneath as the lower layer. As a result the Black Sea despite its considerable depth (an average of 1,200 m), is behaving in climatic respect as a shallow sea, i.e. the temperature of the sea water shows high amplitudes. For this reason the climate of the coast retains its temperature - continental character.
Black Sea coast flora and fauna
Frequently observed are the deciduous forest and bushes dominated by the Turkey oak, the Hungarian oak, the hornbeam and the Christ's thorn. Around the estuaries of the rivers flowing into the sea are the famous dense forests. Their specific outlook is defined by the presence of a great number of lianas.
On the sand strips and the sand dunes species have adopted to the specific conditions of the sand such as the lime-grass, the marram, the cyonura, the sedge (Carex ligerica), the jurinea (Jurinea albicaulis ssp. killaea), the sea spurge, the eryanthes (Eryanthus ravenae), the sand thistle (Centaurea arenaria), the sea lucerne (Medicado marine), and the wild rye (Secale sylvestris) dominate their composition.
The wealth of animal species at the Black Sea coast is extremely great. From the microscopic components of the zoo-plankton through the 126 species of sea fishes, to the several thousands purely land inhabitants of the bio topes on the coast.
The great distance from the centers of Quaternary icing and the influence of the sea defined here the presence of heat-loving southern species. Some of these came from the Mediterranean, others from the Asia Minor. Among the amphibians a typical representative of these heat loving species is the eastern spadefoot. Along the Black Sea coast all 6 species of tortoises discovered in Bulgaria have been observed. The Balkan gecko, the Balkan glass-snake, the eastern Montpellier snake, the Crimean lizard and some other species complete the picture of the southerners.
With similar distribution, the birds are the olive-tree warbler, some other warblers, the fan-tailed warbler, the wheatear, etc. The newcomers from the north, the pied wheatear, the rose colored starling and the racoon dog are no less in number.
Via Pontica (Black Sea Road)
From north to south the Bulgarian sea coast proves to be extremely attractive for migratory birds and especially the ones who prefer to float carried aloft by rising streams of hot air. The migratory path of birds above this beach drew attention of the people in ancient times and since then has become known as Via Pontica (Black Sea Road), the secondary largest migratory route in Europe.
